Lines and wrinkles are part of the natural process of ageing and as we know certain lifestyles can hurry up this process.  A combination of sun damage, gravity, the muscles used for laughing, talking, frowning and crying all add to the formation of lines and wrinkles. While you may have earned one or more of these lines, they can be  particularly stressful for a lot of people. Now thanks to Botox, an injectable subtance you need not worry about them again. Lines and wrinkles could be a thing of the past!
Botox is the trade name for Botulim Toxin. The injection contains a chemical (exotoxin) produced by the bacterium Closstridium Botulinum. This bacterium was discovered in 1879. It has been used for medical purposes since 1976. It is used in conditions where muscle paralysis is desirable eg.squints, spasticity due to cerebral palsy. Doctors Jean and Alister Carruthers, a Vancouver based Ophthalmologist  pioneered Botox for facial lines in 1988. It was noted that the wrinkles dissapeared in patients with eyelid spasm who were treated with botox. This led to further research that confirmed the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine for improving wrinkles, due to overactive muscles on the face.

The treatment involves a series of injections into the muscles responsible for wrinkles. These are given with a fine needle and cause a little stinging pain. It is used in such small quantities that it is not harmful. The treatment usually comprises of about 10-15 injections. Common places to inject are the horizontal forehead lines,  the frown lines in between the eyebrows, 'crows feet' at the corners of the eyes, bags under the eyes and the corners of the mouth. Also can be used for lines on the neck  and to reduce excessive sweating under arms.

The most common side effects are, occasionally, temporary and localised brusing. The most notorious but uncommom complication is drooping of the eyelids. This can be caused by injecting too much botox above the eyes or too close to the eyes. Good technique reduces but does not eliminate this complication. An extremely rare but potentially serious complication is a severe allergic reaction to Botox.

Botox takes between one and ten days to work, usually three days and the treatment lasts three to six months but it may in some individuals last shorter or longer then this. The treatment can be repeated when required. There is some evidence that with time the effects last longer.

There are cases where you should not have Botox, pregnant or breast feeding women. People with bleeding disorders or taking warfarin. People with muscular or neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis or myaesthenia gravis. People taking the antibiotic Gentamicin.

The Botox chemical is expensive. The costs of treatment depends on the quantity of Botox injected. This is usually around 25 units. There are 100 units of  Botox in each bottle and to prevent wastage it is necessary to treat people in groups rather than individually. The cost of Botox at The Beauty Rooms is  £170.00  and is administered by a local GP with  years of experience.
